In Their Words

Friendship

Have you ever been surprised by who showed up for you in a hard time?

Why this question matters

Crisis has a way of stripping away pretense and revealing who people really are. This question uncovers the moments when your parent discovered unexpected depth in someone they thought they knew, or found themselves held by someone they barely knew at all. Their answer often reveals less about friendship and more about their capacity to be surprised by human kindness — and who earned their deepest trust when everything else fell away.

If they pause, try this

Ask if that changed how they thought about that person.

What people often remember when asked this

  • 01

Some parents name someone completely unexpected — a neighbor, coworker, or distant relative who stepped forward when closer friends stepped back. Follow up by asking what that person did specifically, and whether it changed how they choose friends.

  • 02

Others describe being surprised by the depth of support from someone they thought they knew well. Ask them to describe what that person did that felt different from what they expected, and how it deepened the relationship.

  • 03

A few will admit that the people they expected to show up didn't, which taught them something harder but equally valuable. Gently ask what they learned about counting on people, and whether it made them more or less willing to lean on others.

A small tip for the conversation

If they seem to be holding back or say "no one really showed up," try reframing: "Was there anyone who surprised you by how they handled things — even in a small way?"
